  • Hi Natalie. The way you are doing it is absolutely perfect. You want puppy to ask you to let her out, and so far she has always done her business when she has so she has only learnt that if she calls you to let her out to go the the toilet, that is what happens. Well done. Please make sure you socialise your puppy immidiately. Take her to puppy parks, she needs to meet and play with as many types of puppies and dogs as possible, take her to busy, noisy places, introduce her to children, to big men and small men, and all types of men as men have different energy to woman. And enjoy, they do grow up so quickly.

  • Thanks, I have started socialising her and will be starting puppy classes on Saturday.
Right now she is in her pen barking, crying and howling. When she is quiet for a short period (eg. 10 seconds) should i go down to reward her or must i wait until the barking is stopped for a longer while?
She is in such a state when she does finally quiet that even if i do try to praise her for her good behaviour she doesn't seem to notice and wont take any treats or toys.
Sorry for taking up so much of your time, but on Monday i go back to work and need to know that she will be alright (my hubby and i work shifts so she wont be alone for long periods of the day).
Wow, being a puppy mom is hard work :) worth it in the end though :)

  • Hi Natalie. When puppy has been quiet for about 10 seconds then you can reward her. How long will you be away for? What area do you live in because it may be a good idea to take her to puppy creche where she can play with other pooches and just learn that their is a world out their where mum is not around. All the best and enjoy work tomorrow. If you would like a more prompt reply to names of puppy creches, as long as you are in the Cape Town area you can sms me on 0798837566 so that I can reply straight away.

  • last night she slept through and didn't even wee for the first time since we got her :) But she's crying now because i put her in her pen to eat breakfast.
she has started a bad habit of weeing in our sunroom. i clean it up without saying anything and then disinfect the area. i praise her when she makes a wee on the grass, but need to break the habit of weeing on the bricks in the sunroom. do you think it would work if i created a path way leading outside so that she cannot have access to that area?
My husband is at home a lot of the tim when i am not, so she generally wont be alone for long. i have got the details for a puppy creche though. thank you

  • Hi Natalie. I am sorry for the long time to reply but we have just upgraded the site so that I now receive notification when someone has replied to my messages. Hope all is going well. With regards to her peeing on the bricks use surgical spirits to clean it and nothing with amonia in it as this just smells like their toilet. When she does wee their clean it up with toilet paper and put the toilet paper where you want her to toilet as dogs like to smell where their last deposit is. Also try to feed her meals where you do not want her to pee as dogs "generally" do not like to pee where they eat. Hope this advice is not too late in coming.
